PHENOILS CONFRONTS THE START OLIVE SEASON 2020-2021 IN THE SECOND ANNUITY OF THE EUROPEAN PROJECT

Project Phenoils faces its second annuity with the start of another olive oil season.

EnergyPulse Systems (EPS) is starting its tasks for this annuity of PHENOILS project (European R&D project with the financial support of EIT-FOOD), whose season has started on October 1st, 2021.

This project is being carried out by a consortium of partners, working for the benefit of quality, technology, and innovation, in the international olive sector. Partner entities are IG-CSIC (Spain), University of Turin (Italy), Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), EnergyPulse Systems (Portugal) and Acesur (Spain).

Four different locations which could be found in RIS regions, where olive sector has main importance in their economic and social development, have been chosen for the tests and training sessions that will be carried out (Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece).

The project will follow two paths this annuity, the first one is a high pilot scale, carried on by IG-CSIC (Seville) and University of Turin, while in Portugal, an industrial scale trial will be coordinated by EPS. The technologies selected for this annuity are PEF (pulsed electric fields) and Ultrasounds (US), which will be tested independently and combined.

The tests will be carried out with Arbequina, Manzanilla, Coratina and Taggiasca cultivars, at the optimal ripening stage, approximately around November.

All the partners face this new season with optimistic view of finding evidences that allow to determinate the best technology to obtain a new extra virgin olive oil with high amount of polyphenols, overcoming EFSA´s requirements for the labelling of healthy quality and thus contributing even more to beneficial qualities for the consumer.
