This project aims to apply pulsed electric fields (PEF) technology in platelets with no therapeutic value, to contribute for identifying new biological products, with high therapeutic potential and commercial value. We propose this approach to produce a new differentiated biomedical platelet-derived component for non-transfusion use, taking advantage of outdated platelet components that otherwise would be discarded.
In effect, the development of platelet-derivatives is one possibility for blood banks activity diversification in terms of Cellular Therapies and Regenerative Medicine. We will explore how PEF variations, electroporate platelets, induce changes in the activation process, platelet releasate and platelet properties. Moreover, the biological potential of the obtained platelet releasate will be explored for the development of new products such as growth factor supplements for human stem cell culture and new biomaterials for tissue regeneration.
